A real bug you can't see - and one that fixed itself (Devlog #4)
Hey. No new feature this time - just a pass through the corners before the next one. We had a list of nine bugs we'd written down and kept walking past. Most were small. One wasn't, and it was hiding behind a button. When you import a file the studio already has - same bytes - we ask whether to share the existing file or make an independent copy you can edit on its own. Pick "independent copy" and you expect exactly that: your own file, safe to change or delete without touching anything else. It mostly worked. But the new copy's internal name was built from how many copies already existed - copy 2, copy 3, and so on. The problem shows up after a delete. Say you had three, removed the middle one, then made another. The new one counted "two exist, so I'm number three" - but number three was already taken. The studio saw the clash, quietly kept the old file, and pointed your new scene at it. You thought you'd made a clean copy; you were sharing the original, and the real copy you just made was orphaned on disk with nothing pointing at it. Edit "your" copy later and you'd be editing the original too. Nothing crashed. Nothing warned you. That's the worst kind. The fix: stop counting, and instead look at which names are actually taken and pick the first free one - so a copy made after a delete always gets its own identity. We also made the studio shout in the logs if two files ever collide again, instead of silently dropping one. Better a loud bug than a quiet one. The rest were smaller. A menu element could jump for a single frame when you grabbed it (the drag started from where the element was saved , not where it was shown ). A countdown number sat blank for one frame before popping in. And the end screen had a leftover timing delay we fixed - which you'll never see, because that screen is solid black either way. AI Builder Notes - May 2026 AI-assisted notes from my liked-tweets feed, organized around agent workflows, browser traces, model loops, and guardrails. Practical takeaways Start with the workflow, not the agent. A useful agent task has a source of truth, a narrow action, a verifier, and a stop condition. “Review this repo” is vague. “Find auth bugs in these routes, cite file lines, run the relevant tests, and stop after the first credible exploit path” is a workflow. Use dynamic workflows in claude code - to do the vibe bits for thinking through a workflow. Think of it like this - you can describe in natural language an entire workflow consisting of multiple agents at various steps - I want the docs updated, tests passed, security review done and also playwright tests done. Dynamic workflows figures out which parts can be divided in parallel and what should be done sequentially. Creates a flowchart - and writes JS code for it. Its a JS script that can execute subagents at scale and deterministically [1] Planner/executor split is the way to go. Spend the expensive model on taste, decomposition, and risk discovery. Use cheaper or narrower models for repeatable implementation once the task has tests, rubrics, logs, or examples. [2] Do not judge an agent workflow by the model name alone. If the loop has repo access, a rubric, a way to inspect tool calls, and a verifier, a less fashionable model can still do useful work. The Letta Code / GLM 5.1 review-bot example is interesting for that reason, not because “someone used X instead of Y” is interesting by itself. [3] Prefer small interfaces to giant tool menus. MCP tool call definitions are rotting your context! The monday.com GraphQL example was the clearest cost warning: one task used 15k tokens through SDK/code-mode and 158k tokens through a real MCP server. Your NAS Is Loud Because of Docker and Syncthing (and How to Fix It)
You buy a NAS for silent, always-on storage. It sits in a corner, humming quietly, doing its thing. Then you install Docker. Then Syncthing. Then a few containers. Suddenly the HDDs never stop. Seeking, spinning, clicking. Not occasionally - constantly. At 2am you can hear it from the next room. This is what happened, why it happens, and how to make it stop. What's Actually Causing the Noise Mechanical HDDs make noise when the read/write head moves. The more random the I/O - small reads and writes scattered across the disk - the more seeking, the more noise. Sequential writes to a single file are quiet. Random I/O across thousands of small files is loud. Docker and Syncthing are both pathological for HDDs in different ways. Docker overlay2 Docker's default storage driver is overlay2. Every container runs on top of layered filesystems - the image layers are stacked, and a thin writable layer sits on top for each running container. Every file operation inside a container that touches a file from a lower layer triggers a copy-on-write : the entire file gets copied up to the writable layer before the write happens. On an SSD this is fast and silent. On spinning HDDs with mechanical heads, every copy-on-write is a seek, a read, and a write - often scattered across the disk. And it's not just copy-on-write. Docker's overlay2 metadata lives in small files across a deep directory tree. Container startup reads dozens of these. Log rotation writes to them. Health checks touch them. Any container doing anything at all generates constant scattered I/O. Syncthing's 60-Second Heartbeat Syncthing uses BoltDB as its internal database - it stores file indexes, sync state, and peer information there. BoltDB flushes to disk every 60 seconds regardless of whether anything changed. On a busy sync folder with thousands of files, this flush isn't a single sequential write.
